It’s a NEW year! Every year people look at the past year and see a few flaws or things that they could have done better and this year they don’t want to make the same mistakes.

This always results in making a new years resolution of some sort. Have you made yours yet? Well if you have selected one of these reasons below this year, you are not alone!

Drink less alcohol, eat healthy food, get a better education, get a better job, get fit, lose weight, manage debt, manage stress, quit smoking, reduce reuse and recycle, save money, take a trip or volunteer to help others.

This year take a few of the following items into consideration when making your New Year’s Resolution:

Make it something that you really want. Don’t make a resolution because it’s something someone else wants you to do or something you “should” want. Select something that fits into your own lifestyle and values.

Quality not Quantity. If you are going to select more then one solution, keep it at or under three. Make on a few resolutions that you intend to keep. It ensures that you are focusing on the goals that you truly want.

Be Specific. In your goal, include time line or dates that are realistic. For an example, instead of saying “get to the gym more,” set a schedule such as “I’m going to the gym on Tuesday and Thursdays after work.”

Automation. Use automation to help assist you with completing your goals by setting alarms or reminders. For an example, if you are trying to pay down debt, calculate the amount each check and then have it automatically deposited or paid towards that debt. It takes all the effort out of remembering or writing a check.

Make a plan. Create a series of smaller goals in order to complete and accomplish the larger goal. It helps to have a plan of action.

Keep all of these recommendations in mind when choosing a New Year’s Resolution that way, at this time next year you are able to check them off your list!
