National Honey Month - September 10, 2015

September is National Honey Month! Honey has a variety of uses including health benefits, here are just a few!

  • Prevents cancer and heart disease because it contains flavonoids, antioxidants which help to reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease.
  • Reduces ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders which was recently discovered and help improve bacterial gastroenteritis.
  • Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal by the enzyme that makes hydrogen peroxide which is added by the bees during the production process.
  • Increased performance through boosting and maintaining a glycogen levels and is a great natural sweetener.
  • Reduce cough and throat irritation through the use of honey, especially buckwheat honey. Honey has been shown to be just as effective as a single does of dextromethorphan.
  • Blood sugar regulation is also a benefit of honey, because the honey has the exact combination of fructose and glucose works together with the body to regulate blood sugar levels. Some honey is even considered to be low hypoglycemic index.
  • Heals wounds and burns by applying honey to the surface of the wound. This has been proven to be as effective as silver sulfadiazine.
  • Probiotic, some honeys contain large amounts of friendly bacteria. These friendly bacteria’s include 6 species of lactobacilli and 4 species of bifidobactera.
  • Beautiful skin, since honey has anti-bacterial qualities and when honey is combined with other ingredients it can be moisturizing and nourishing to the skin.

 

Asian Honey-Tea Grilled Prawns

The mixture of orange spice tea and honey is fantastic. Don't expect leftovers.

From: BeeMaid / Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 Medium Shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • Salt
  • 2 Green Onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 Cup Brewed double strength orange spice tea, cooled
  • ¼ Cup Honey
  • ¼ Cup Rice Vinegar
  • ¼ cup Soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Fresh Ginger, peeled and finely chopped
  • ½ Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

Directions

  1. In a plastic bag, combine all of the ingredients except for the shrimp.
  2. Remove ½ cup of the marinade; set aside for dipping sauce.
  3. Add shrimp to marinade in the bag, turn to coat. Close the bag securely and marinate in refrigerator for 30 minutes or up to 12 hours.
  4. When ready to cook, remove shrimp from marinade; discard the marinade remaining in the bag. Thread the shrimp onto 8 skewers, dividing evenly.
  5. Grill over medium coals 4 to 6 minutes or until the shrimp turn pink and are just firm to the touch, turning once.
  6. Season with salt to taste.
  7. Meanwhile, prepare dipping sauce by placing reserved ½ cup marinade in small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Boil 3 to 5 minutes or until slightly reduced. Stir in green onions.

Pool Closing Seminar - September 09, 2015

To help our customers prepare for fall and winter, Pool World has their annual Pool Closing Seminar Thursday October 1st at 7:00 pm. The class will be held at the Central Store located at 5701 E Sprague Ave.

New or experienced residential pool owners are welcome to join us at this event to learn more about their swimming pool and how to prepare for winter. If you attend this event you will have the pleasure of being taught by our BioGuard representative who has years of expertise in the pool industry. It’s an ideal time to come and ask questions about normal pool operation, water chemistry and pool closing. Come enjoy refreshments and take advantage of special savings.
