Beating the heat this summer! - July 17, 2013
Another weekend is just within reach! This weekend is predicted to 95 degrees which is 10 degrees higher then our average temperature for the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene area during this time of year.
With summer being synonymous with hot temperatures, swimming, backyard parties and venturing outdoors which may put you out during the hottest part of the day. There are a few things to keep in mind while enjoying the summer fun!
Enjoy the outdoors but take it easy: It sounds pretty simple, but it is easy to overexert yourself. It doesn’t matter if it’s kids playing outside, outdoor labor or maybe a workout outdoors, be aware of how your body feels and don’t push your self too hard. Heaven for bid that you do push your self a little to hard and go overboard and start to feel poor, there are three common heat related illnesses to be aware of.
Heat Cramps: involuntary muscle spasms throughout the body. Heat Exhaustion: headache, nausea, extreme thirst and weakness. Heat Stroke: (Extremely Serious; possible death) rapid and shallow breathing, hot/red skin, rapid heartbeat, seizures plus all the symptoms of heat exhaustion.
It’s very important to be aware of these symptoms and to recognize this sign before it’s too late. It’s recommended to find shady spot to cool down and to drink water. If you believe that it is heat stroke, immediately contact emergency services.
Stay Hydrated: Drink and lots of extra water on hand. It’s imperative to drink at least 8 cups of water a day and even more while enjoying the hot weather. The body loses a lot of water through perspiration by the body’s attempt to keep cool. In the process of sweating the body looses water and salt (electrolytes.) It is also recommend to consume sports drinks occasionally to boost the electrolytes, this will help to prevent any heat cramps from occurring. Remember to keep all of your water and sport drinks cold because it can assist you with keeping your core temperature lower, at a more comfortable temperature.
White or Light-Colored Clothing: White and light-colored clothing helps to reflect light and heat from the sun away from the body. This will allow your body to stay at a more comfortable temperature. Clothing fabric that is breathable and loose fitting will also assist your body in regulating a lower more comfortable temperature. And remember the sunscreen for areas of your body that are not covered by clothing.
If you are looking to add your own backyard retreat to cool off in, please look at our Vinyl pools or our Gunite pools.
